Club updates… 1. Nancy has agreed to be the Lieutenant Governor for Division 6 2020-2021, congrats Nancy! 2. This past week we have offered support for our health care workers at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea. The hospital will run a Stress Free Zone for at least the next four weeks. The Zone will feature aromatherapy, snacks, and other stress relieving items. Gift cards for front line workers will also be purchased. 3. The club has approved purchasing a subscription for Learning Ally, a program students can use via the internet to improve reading skills. South Meadows Elementary will determine eligibility for their students to participate. This should help the children now, when in person learning is temporarily halted. 4. Chelsea Kiwanis Club continues to support the community April 18, 2020 (Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.) The Chelsea Kiwanis has continued meeting virtually for the last three weeks via Zoom. It is a great way to connect with members who had been unable to attend our regular meetings at the hospital. This week we have offered support for our health care workers at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea. The hospital will run a Stress Free Zone for at least the next four weeks. The Zone will feature aromatherapy, snacks, and other stress relieving items. Gift cards for front line workers will also be purchased. The club has approved purchasing a subscription for Learning Ally, a program students can use via the internet to improve reading skills. South Meadows Elementary will determine eligibility for their students to participate. This should help the children now, when in-person learning is temporarily halted. Normally, Chelsea Kiwanis meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m. Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to enjoy our speakers and learn about Kiwanis. NEXT POST – Frozen Kiwanis Hot Dogs!

Hip, hip hooray for frozen Chelsea Kiwanis Club hotdogs April 4, 2020 Chelsea Kiwanis Club hotdogs found in my freezer from last year’s Sounds & Sights Festival. With the Chelsea Kiwanis Club following state-wide guidelines for gatherings and meetings, the club’s usual Saturday story hasn’t been running. Well, I thought readers might appreciate another type of Kiwanis story for your Saturday reading smile. I was searching for something else in my freezer Sunday and came across a freezer bag of three Kiwanis hotdogs still wrapped in paper nestled in their buns According to the date on the freezer bag, I’d bought them at the Sounds and Sights Festival last July. Then, for some reason, after I bought them, I brought them home. And froze them. Why I purchased three extra dogs – other than I LOVE the Kiwanis hotdogs? No clue. I’m not a knockwurst person like so many people. Kiwanis hotdogs are my favorites — well done, please.So once I spied them in my freezer, I had to have one. NOW. But, how to defrost and heat it up the fastest? No, I didn’t google it. That would have been too easy. And take too much time. Nope, after considering defrosting it in the microwave first, then putting it under the broiler – bun and all – I skipped the first stage and popped it right under the broiler. I really wanted that hot dog ASAP. Well, let’s just say, my plan was 50-percent successful. Good thing I’m not a big fan of bread – because although the hotdog survived the broiler, the bun did not. In addition to it being thoroughly scorched on top, which I could have dealt with, broiling it turned the bun into a rock-hard lump. So, the bread got composted, but the hot dog, oh that aromatic little meal. It tasted so good. Like it had just been served to me with a big smile from a Kiwanian. And when I closed my eyes, to really take in the aroma and flavor, I could almost feel myself being transported to Middle Street and then to the fairgrounds, sitting at a picnic table, eating one of these just off the grill. Since I still have two left, if anyone has a fool-proof plan to save both the bun and the dog, I am open to any and all ideas. (I trust this community’s ideas more than Google’s.) So, for now, I’m saving them and waiting for a day when I need another reminder of summer fun. The coveted frozen Kiwanis hotdog before I incinerated the bun under the broiler.
